Developing creative contexts for language, literacy and learning across the curriculum

Understanding the craft of the writer: fiction and poetry
A full day course for P6-S2 teachers which offers practical explorations of the writer’s craft in order to deepen textual understandings and develop classroom practice in the reading and writing of fiction and poetry.

It is important that we provide opportunities for children to read as if they were the writers who created the text, and help them to write with a view to the needs and enjoyment of the reader – in other words understand the craft of the writer and explore the close links between the two modes of reading and writing and understand how they impact upon each other. Such an approach helps to demystify the difficult art of writing by making explicit the techniques used by authors to engage and entertain the reader. In addition, by developing teacher understanding of texts and how they work, children can be enabled to harness the tools of the author’s trade to become more confident readers and writers themselves.
