Developing creative contexts for language, literacy and learning across the curriculum

Reading and writing across the curriculum S1-S2
In the words of A Curriculum for Excellence, every teacher is a teacher of literacy. With that in mind, this course allows subject specialists to explore strategies for reading and writing that will allow the literacy needs of their subject to be more effectively met for S1 and S2 pupils.

Ideally, literacy across the curriculum should be part of a whole school development initiative, but this course will give individual teachers a good starting point for developing practice in the classroom and across their department. Run recently in South Lanarkshire.

Aims
  • To develop teacher understandings of the reading and writing needs associated with their subject area
  • To offer strategies to help pupils engage more successfully with subject-related reading and writing
Content
  • Consideration of the issues relating to reading and writing across the secondary curriculum
  • Exploration of the features of the major non-fiction text-types
  • Interactive and engaging strategies for meeting the needs of the reader
  • Interactive and engaging strategies for meeting the needs of the writer
