Ways With Words
Why worry about words? A good vocabulary is one of the key factors in ensuring success with reading comprehension, as well as its obvious application in written work. This half day workshop for teachers of P5-S2 includes a collection of short, enjoyable and challenging investigations and activities designed to promote vocabulary and language enrichment, helping to engender curiosity and enthusiasm for words and their ways. Run in Inverclyde and South Lanarkshire.
This half day course can combine with The Spelling Bank to make a whole day of word-related CPD.
Aims
  • To increase teacher awareness of approaches to the development of vocabulary and langage enrichment, and how they can impact on children’s appreciation of text
Content

Why worry about words?
Strategies for vocabulary and language enrichment, which could include:

  • exploration of the history of the English language
  • investigating etymology
  • getting to grips with dictionaries
  • synonyms and antonyms and the role of the thesaurus
  • homonyms, homophones and puns
  • rhythm and syllables
  • simile, metaphor and imagery
  • miscellanies
  • proverbs
  • investigating txt msgs!
