Making Word work harder - to enrich reading and writing
Microsoft Word has many hidden or advanced features which can help give children a richer experience of working with texts, deepening the reading and writing experience - but these are often unknown and unused by teachers. This challenging but supportive half day course provides upper primary and lower secondary teachers with an opportunity to become familiar with the reviewing tool, word counts and summaries, tables and a range of ways to select, search, replace and reconstruct texts in order to explore meanings, locate and process information, providing effective ways to explore the craft of the wirter and develop some advanced reading and writing skills. Run in Inverclyde.

This half day course can combine with eDARTs to make a full day of ICT-related CPD.

Aims
  • To provide an introduction to some advanced features of Word
  • To explore some ways of using these features in English activities
Content
  • Advanced formatting – exploring layers of meaning in texts
  • Working with tables - selecting and collecting information
  • Collapsing text – playing with poems
  • Working with word counts – e.g. mini sagas
  • Tracking changes – peer-supported editing and annotation
  • Challenging the summary tool
  • Invstgtng txt msgng – using the forms facility to harness the power of texting
